The 2008 model year introduced the GL550 as the flagship of the first-generation (X164) GL-Class. While the GL450 used the 4.7-liter V8, the GL550 arrived with the larger 5.5-liter all-aluminum DOHC 32-valve V8 (M273) producing 382 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque, mated to the 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic and full-time 4MATIC all-wheel drive. This gave it the strongest performance in the lineup while retaining the GL’s three-row capability, Airmatic air suspension, and 7,500-pound towing capacity.
