Vehicle Description 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS Hardtop The 3rd generation Impala ran from 1961-1964 and would end up being one of the most important American cars to date. These were substantial years in which the Super Sport and the world famous 409 engines were released. The SS Impala played an integral role in formulating what we now know as the original muscle cars. They weren't particularly rare with more than 185,000 produced, but they set into motion a more performance oriented American car culture. For consignment, a 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS 2 door hardtop showing 64,022 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption. This is a one family car, purchased on July 6, 1964, and always garaged. Exterior The single stage Palomar Red paint is not just contrasted by the bright work on the car, it's accentuated by it! While the slab sided panels and the spear trim on the side are consistent with many cars of the era, it's the distinctive headlights and of course, tail section that makes the Impala stand out. We rolled with the design in the 60's, but today the triple tail lights, turned metal trim in back, along with the dual headlights on the flat faced grille, are special and cool and instantly recognizable, and it's all presented with great quality here. To add even more excitement, 14-inch wheels with proper covers are tucked in the wheel wells with 7.50-14 tires at all four corners. Following the line of the windshield, the rear antenna sweeps back as if pushed by the wind. Imperfections on this survivor includes chips throughout, general inclusions, a few dings in the stainless trim, some light blistering on the decklid that's heavier on the inside, pitting on door handles, cracking paint, scratches, and scuffs on the bumpers, Interior Patina is noted on the door panels which feature silver pleats and gold carpet. Low back buckets for the front, and a wide rear bench, also in silver vinyl are also in nice shape with some slight wear on the driver's seat. The original dash in black with a shiny machined aluminum strip that runs across the bottom, is fronted black and silver three spoke steering wheel showing years of love. This still has the base AM radio and a modest shifter rises from the center console and is based in more turned aluminum. Gold carpet for the floors shows some age and so does the headliner which suffers from some tears. The trunk is clean and finished with cut to fit vinyl mats. Drivetrain Here we have the 230ci inline six cylinder is driver quality visually, rated at 140 horsepower and fuel is mixed by a 1-barrel carburetor. Behind it, the Powerglide 2-peed automatic transmission sends power to the rear axle and 3.08 gears.  Undercarriage Driver quality here with some typical surface rust, residual oil, and some soot residue. The single exhaust hugs the lines of the X-brace after traveling through a stock style muffler, then exits through a chrome tip. Drum brakes are on all four wheels and suspension includes coil springs front and rear with a 4 link in back. Drive-Ability The six cylinder fires right up and the car delivers a smooth cruise across our test loop and the pride of one family provides a fully functional automobile that does everything well. We're on 25 year old white wall tires so speed is not a factor today, but this qualifies as one smooth Impala with some great attributes. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. Impala SS hardtops are quick sellers here at the mall and to find one that has the provenance of being a one family car is fairly extraordinary, 62 years after it left the Wilmington, Delaware plant. Drive it as is or create the original show car of your dreams. Today, your safari ends with acquisition of this fine Impala specimen! 41347Y218328 4-1964 13-Impala SS I6 47-2 Door Coupe Y-Wilm |
